Look at the beginning sound.

Look across the word.

Look through the entire word.  Notice middle and ending sounds.

What do I know?

If I know "day", I can read "play."

Does the word follow phonemic rules?

Chunk the word.

Look for word families, or chunks, to attack the work more quickly.  For example, grandma: gr-and-ma

Look into the word.

Look for sounds/chunks you know in the middle.  See if you can find a base word, like "go" in "going."

What other sound can I try?

Does the oo in "hook" make the same sound as in "moon" or "book?"
