Classroom Policies |
Class work & Homework: Students are expected to complete class work each day while at school. However, when a student does not complete an assignment during the day, he/she will be expected to complete the work for homework. This will be in addition to regular scheduled homework. A Homework Schedule will be sent home each week and also posted on the school website under "Classroom Pages", "Mrs. Sherlin". Students will be expected to complete the homework the day that it is assigned and turn it in the next school day. If a student does not turn in a homework assignment he/she will not receive a work stamp for that day. If the work is turned in by the end of the week, he/she will then receive a stamp.
Discipline: I use positive reinforcement as my main discipline tool. All students are placed on the behavior board at Step 1. When a student continues to disobey he/she is asked to move his/her name to step 2. This will only be a warning and no further consequences will be given. If a student continues to misbehave his/her name will be moved to step 3, losing 15 minutes of free time and a note will be written on the student's work/behavior note. Further misbehaving will result in moving to step 4 and losing all free time. If misbehavior continues the student's parent will be called and/or the student will be sent to the principal.
Weekly Packets: A work packet will be sent home with each student the first day of the school week. This packet will contain all completed work from the previous week. It will also contain the Homework Schedule, homework worksheets, reading vocabulary, spelling word list, and any notes that I or Mr. Riggs may need to send. This packet will have a behavior/work note from the previous week. This note will have any work that has not been completed and any behavior problems that may have arisen. When AR begins, the students' AR points will also be reported on this note. Please sign this note and return it (and also the clip) the following school day. It is best to return this note in the student's agenda. The clip can also be clipped to the agenda. The student will be rewarded for behavior, work, and AR when the note and clip are returned.
Tests: Spelling this year will correspond to our new reading books. Students will be given a Spelling test on Friday. The test will be on all words and sentences on the spelling list. (For some students this test will be modified. Those parents will be informed as to what their child needs to be responsible for.) Reading vocabulary test will be given on Thursday and the reading story test will be given on Friday. This will change when school is out on Friday. Science and Social Studies tests will be open book and are usually read aloud by the teacher. Other tests will vary depending on when a unit is completed.
Agendas: Agendas need to be looked at EVERY night and returned the next day. I will use the agenda for communication and also to send any needed papers home. Please check your child's agenda EVERY night. Also, when homework begins, the agenda will be needed.
Rewards: Students will be rewarded weekly with small prizes. These will be given for 100% on Reading and Spelling tests. There will also be various other times students will receive prizes. A student will also get a large prize from the treasure chest when he/she has filled up his/her megaphone card. Each week he/she can earn 3 stickers (work, behavior, & AR). When 12 stickers are earned, his/her card will be full.
