5th Grade Assignment, Grading, and Discipline Policy

Agendas: Please check and sign your child’s agenda each day. This is a way to keep up with daily work and a means of communicating with the teacher.

Homework: Daily work not completed in class will be considered homework. If assignments are not turned in to the teacher the following class day, 10 points will be deducted from the grade. Work will not be accepted after that.  Checking agendas daily can prevent this from happening. Missing work cause averages to drop quickly. Projects may not be turned in late.

Extra Credit: Until the Christmas break, students can improve their overall averages by re-doing daily work that receives a grade 84% or below. Re-done work is due the day after the paper is returned. Work will be re-graded and the two averaged. Projects are not extra credit and tests cannot be redone. It is the student’s choice to re-do work. However, the teacher may require that an assignment be corrected or replaced with a different exercise.

Mid-terms: You will receive a mid-term report three weeks into the grading period. These grades reflect the current averages and are a means of assessing progress the student is making.

Tests: Tests can not be re-done unless otherwise specified.

Excused absences: Students should borrow someone’s agenda to record assignments missed or check teacher’s website. Student may take as many days as absent to turn in missed work. For example, if the student misses one day, he/she will have one day after returning to turn in missed work. If you would like the student’s assignments to be left in the office to pick up, please give teachers at least an hour notice to put things together. If a test was assigned the day a student was absent, he/she should be prepared to take the test the day of return. Projects are announced well in advance and are due on the day scheduled, even if the student is absent. It will be at the teacher’s discretion if work missed during an unexcused absence can be made up. Refer to the student agenda for absentee policy.

Fridays: Fridays in 5th grade are designated as “Fun Fridays” with grade group activities in the afternoon. Students with missing assignments or disruptive behavior in the classroom during the week will not be allowed to participate in that Friday’s activity. Students who miss two or more Fun Fridays due to behavior or missing assignments prior to the Nashville field trip will not be allowed to go. Students who miss a total of six Fun Fridays for the year will not be allowed to go to Dollywood in May. Students who receive two or more principal assigned detention or any suspensions will not be allowed to participate in field trips. Field trips are a privilege and should be treated as such.
